Andrey Kuraev

Andrei Vyacheslavovich Kuraev (born February 15, 1963 in Moscow) is a religious and public figure, theologian, philosopher, publicist, and blogger. Until April 2023, he was a cleric of the Russian Orthodox Church, holding the rank of protodeacon. Since April 3, 2024, he has been a cleric of the Church of Constantinople, and since July 2024, he has been a member of the clergy of the Exarchate of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Lithuania.

He holds a PhD in Philosophy and a PhD in Theology. From 2004 to 2013, he was a professor at the Moscow Theological Academy and also worked in the philosophy department of Moscow State University. In 2020, the Moscow Diocesan Court defrocked Kuraev, a decision that took effect in April 2023 after approval by Patriarch Kirill. Kuraev himself did not recognize this decision. In April 2024, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew reinstated him to the priesthood.
