Ilya Kalinin is a philologist and cultural historian and a research fellow at Humboldt University Berlin. From 2002 to 2021, he was editor and then editor-in-chief of the journal "Neprikosvenny Zapas: Debates on Politics and Culture" and two book series published by Novoye Literary Obozreniye (Moscow). Until 2022, he was a professor in the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences (Smolny College) of St. Petersburg State University and the National Research University Higher School of Economics (St. Petersburg). His research focuses on early Soviet cultural history, the cultural policy of post-Soviet Russia, and the cultural history of natural resources. He is the author of two books and over 250 scholarly articles and essays, translated into 16 languages.
