Mark Belorusets was born in 1943 during evacuation in the Urals. He lived in Kyiv, worked as a construction engineer for over 30 years, and was close to the circle of Ukrainian dissidents. Since 1978, he has been published as a translator of German and Austrian poetry and prose into Russian.
For his translations of Paul Celan he was awarded the Andrei Bely Prize (2008), and has also translated Georg Trakl, Robert Musil, Gottfried Benn, Günther Eich, Manes Sperber, Herta Müller, Herta Kreftner and many others. He is a two-time winner of the Austrian Republic Prize. He lives in Berlin.
