Author's reading of Ivan Vyrypaev "The Cherry Man"

"The Cherry Man" is a black absurdist comedy with boundless humor that will make you laugh and cry at the same time.

The play tells the story of the end of the "cherry era" and the decline of civilization, and also shows the approaching end of the cultural era of Chekhov and other figures of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century, one era replacing another.

The action takes place in the USA, in the former home of a married couple, Tom and Jerry, who return to their luxurious estate after several years. All this time, their black servants, Suzanne and Daniel, lived in the house, as well as their uncle Bernard. Bernard is an elderly man who is not quite in his right mind: he considers himself Russian and feels responsible for all the atrocities committed in the world and in the USA. However, it seems that he is not the only one who needs emergency help in this house…

The play will be read by the author himself, Ivan Vyrypaev, a well-known and recognized playwright, one of the founders of the Teal House Foundation for Assistance to Refugee Artists.

In his latest play, originally written for the National Theatre in Prague, he uses his characteristic caustic humour and poetic interludes to reflect on his personal sense of guilt after the start of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine. At the end of the evening, Ivan is available to answer questions from the audience.
