The author tells the story of Europe in the late 20th and early 21st centuries—how, emerging from the hell of war in 1945, it slowly recovered and rebuilt, liberated and united, to move closer to the ideal of a Europe "whole, free, and at peace." One chapter of Homelands is, of course, devoted to the war in Ukraine.
The discussion at the meeting will focus not only on the fabric of historical facts, but also on values: what makes Europe Europe? What was its path? Where has Europe arrived today—has it failed?
Homelands is an honest conversation about what went wrong and an urgent call to the citizens of the great old continent to protect what Europeans have achieved together.
Timothy Garton Ash is a renowned historian and political scientist, professor at Oxford University, and recipient of the Charlemagne Prize for his contribution to European unification.
