The Church as Eyjafjallajökull: Why Andrei Kuraev Sees the History of the Church as a History of Catastrophes

Deacon Andrei Kuraev is a theologian and the author of over 50 books. The Russian government designated him a "foreign agent," and the Russian Orthodox Church defrocked him after 33 years of service (he was reinstated by the Ecumenical Patriarch). His story begins with a dream: how the first generation of Christians envisioned the future of their "project." What, when, and why "went wrong"?

A difficult choice: the flight of a few “saints” from society-politics-history, or “non-white clothes”.

Incidentally, this is the name of the new multi-volume book series by Fr. Andrey.

The first three books have already been published by BAbook: "The Mythology of Russian Wars" (in two volumes) and "Sacred Wars of the Orthodox World." The next two volumes are already in print ("Mission and Violence").

His publications and stories contain a huge amount of little-known and fascinating historical material and closely link it to contemporary themes and discussions about war, peace and faith.

Despite the lecturer's religious status, he criticizes myths and superstitions. These include myths about things that supposedly never happened in Russian history: there were no aggressive wars, colonialism, the Inquisition, or the Crusades.

However, this is all just to indicate possible topics of conversation. The main focus of the evening will be dialogues with you and questions from you.

Books will be available for purchase at the meeting.
